Huge Archive Of Old San Francisco Newsreel Footage Loaded Onto YouTube
LONDON (CBS SF) -- A British media firm has uploaded a huge archive of old San Francisco footage and history onto the company's YouTube channel.
The historic San Francisco clips are part of the 85,000 vintage newsreels of British Pathé, which began producing newsreel footage in the early 1900's.
The company has made its entire collection available on YouTube in conjunction with German Internet TV network Mediakraft Networks.
The old San Francisco footage ranges from the 1906 earthquake and fire destruction to the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge to 1960s color footage.
On the British Pathé blog, General Manager Alastair White said "Our hope is that everyone, everywhere who has a computer will see these films and enjoy them."
"This archive is a treasure trove unrivaled in historical and cultural significance that should never be forgotten," White said. "Uploading the films to YouTube seemed like the best way to make sure of that."
Mediakraft Networks' CEO Spartacus Olsson told the Guardian Liberty Voice the videos are a 20th century treasure trove and believes that "today's world and future generations can benefit tremendously from learning from its past."
