Hotels Packed To The Gills In Santa Clara
SAN JOSE (KCBS) – Business is booming at the eight hotels around the Great America theme park in Santa Clara. For the second straight year, June hotel occupancy rates in the county have topped 80 percent.
"It's a great number. We've only reached 80 percent one other time within the past 10 years, and that was June of last year," said Steve Van Dorn, head of the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
The averages compiled by the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce and Convention-Visitors Bureau include the Avatar Hotel, Biltmore Hotel & Suites, Embassy Suites, Hilton Santa Clara, Hotel Sierra, Hyatt Regency Santa Clara, Marriott Santa Clara, and the Plaza Suites.
"Over the past year we've seen a consistent uptick in occupancy and the average daily rate for the hotels. We're also seeing increased business travel, more events being held at the convention center and the hotels, and increased leisure travel."
KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:
Van Dorn said that hotels here haven't been affected by the economic downturn in the way that many others around the country have.
"Silicon Valley is still churning along pretty strongly, and we're seeing continued meetings being held, business travel still happening, and that's all because we are at the center of Silicon Valley here in Santa Clara," said Van Dorn.
