UPDATE: Suspect Arrested After Hostage Standoff In San Jose's Alum Rock Neighborhood
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies were able to arrest a suspect after a hostage situation in San Jose that started late Monday night.
At approximately 11:13 p.m. Monday evening, deputies responded to a disturbance call involving a weapon at a home on the 3000 block of East Hills Drive in unincorporated San Jose.
Upon arrival, deputies later determined the disturbance call involved a man with a firearm. Deputies later identified the suspect who barricaded himself inside of the house, and held his elderly father hostage against his will as 38-year-old Balbir Singh.
Sheriff's Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were
activated and responded to the scene with the primary mission of protecting the life of Singh's father and ensuring Singh surrendered peacefully.
The Sheriff's office urged people to stay away from the area on Twitter as hostage negotiators tried to make contact with Singh during the hours-long standoff.
The Crisis Negotiation Team used various de-escalation techniques and negotiation tactics for over 14 hours, which ultimately lead to Singh peacefully surrendering to deputies.
There were no injuries sustained from this incident due to the tactical patience and expertise of the deputies who responded. Singh was eventually arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on
charges of assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment, criminal Threats, and Probation Violation.
Singh is currently on county probation for assault with a deadly weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and domestic violence.
