Host Mayor Expects To Lose Money On Super Bowl XLIX

GLENDALE, Ariz. (CBS SF) - The mayor of the host city for next Sunday's Super Bowl says he doesn't expect to see an economic boost from the biggest sporting event of the year.

Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers told ESPN "I totally believe we will lose money on this."

The ESPN report cites a previous claim by Weiers that the Phoenix suburb lost more than a million dollars when it hosted in 2008, before he took office. Glendale officials say they spent $3.4 million in public safety and security while hosting in last time and took in far less in tax revenue.

At the time, Arizona Cardinal officials blasted claims of losses as "bunch of malarkey."

In 2013, Levi's Stadium was named the host for the 50th Super Bowl. The game will be held at the Santa Clara facility, but many of the associated events for the game will be held in San Francisco.

At the time, Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews said that when he heard the game would be played in his city, "a shot of electricity came through me."

He said it is estimated that a Super Bowl brings between $300 and $500 million in economic benefits to the surrounding region.
