Homeowner Detains Burglar In San Leandro Home; Suspect Arrested
SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A 20-year-old man was arrested in San Leandro Sunday night after the resident whose home he allegedly tried to burglarize detained him, police said.
Police got a report around 10:50 p.m. Sunday of a burglary in progress at a home in the 100 block of Oakes Boulevard in San Leandro, police Lt. Jeff Tudor said.
A witness reporting the crime told police that the suspect was struggling with the victim, who was trying to stop the suspect from fleeing.
Officers arrived on the scene to find a man being held down on the ground by the victim, police said.
Police learned that the resident had discovered the suspect inside their home's garage and that the suspect then tried to flee.
Officers arrested the suspect, identified as Mack Lapatrick of Oakland, on suspicion of burglary and took him to county jail.
Police credited the resident for helping lead to Mack's arrest.
"We would never encourage citizens to taken action and put their safety at risk. That is a personal choice," Tudor said. "In this case, the brave actions of the victim allowed for us to make an arrest of a burglary suspect who was preying upon San Leandro neighborhoods."
Anyone with further information about this case was asked to call Detective Sgt. CalCagno at (510) 577-3238 or San Leandro police's anonymous tip line at (510) 577-3278.
