Hit & Run Driver Drags San Jose Teen

SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / BCN) -- A San Jose high school student is in critical but stable condition after a hit and run driver dragged her hundreds of feet Sunday morning.

Authorities say 18-year-old Erika Luna and her boyfriend were walking along Fontaine Road near Tierra Buena Drive around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Luna was dragged about 2,000 feet and was taken to San Jose Regional Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition, Officer Jose Garcia of the San Jose Police said. The driver never stopped.

Much of her skin, muscle and tendons on one side of her hip were torn during the incident. Doctors say she underwent two surgeries and that she may never walk again.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

Police are searching for the vehicle and the driver, who has not
yet been identified. The Luna family said there is a good chance the driver may live in the neighborhood.

"We suspect the vehicle has front-end damage, but we don't know to what extent," Garcia said.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the driver. Luna's family is also contributing a $2,000 reward.

Luna was set to graduate from high school this year and planned to study to become a nurse.

According to police, the suspect is believed to be a male. The suspect's vehicle is a silver or gray minivan or SUV with a rounded back.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department's traffic investigations unit at (408) 277-4654 or Crime Stoppers at (408) 947-STOP (7867).
