Hit-And-Run Suspect Dies After 2nd Richmond Crash
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - A hit-and-run suspect was killed when he drove into a tree just off of Interstate Highway 80 in Richmond Tuesday afternoon, police and California Highway Patrol officials said.
The suspect's van hit another car on the Richmond Parkway off-ramp from westbound I-80 around noon, CHP Officer Daniel Hill said. No one was injured but there was damage to both vehicles, he said.
After that collision, the suspect continued driving, heading west on Richmond Parkway in the van, Hill said.
About a block away, the suspect lost control and crashed into a tree in the 3400 block of Richmond Parkway and the van overturned, Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.
Emergency crews responded and pronounced the driver dead.
The driver, who was alone in the van, was a 33-year-old man who was handicapped. He was driving a handicap-equipped van that was registered to him, Abetkov said.
Police are have not yet released his name.
Authorities have shut down westbound Richmond Parkway between Blume Drive and San Pablo Avenue. Abetkov said at about 1:30 p.m. that there was no estimate yet for when the roadway would reopen.
