Historic Windmill At Golden Gate Park Refurbished
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The second phase of the reconstruction of one of San Francisco's two Golden Gate Park historic windmills wrapped up Monday when a copper dome was placed on the top by a giant crane.
The Murphy Windmill was build around the time of the 1906 earthquake to pump water to Stow Lake, but over the years it deteriorated. For Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsberg, this capping of the copper dome was a key part of the $5 million restoration.
KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:
"We are celebrating a long journey of refurbishing the Murphy Windmill," he said.
The windmill was designed after its Dutch ancestries, and San Francisco's Dutch community played an important role in pushing this restoration. When the project is completed next summer the Murphy Windmill should be able to pump enough water to at least irrigate the surrounding park landscape.
