Hip Hop Trio 'De La Soul' Gives Away Music For Free
(CBS SF) - It's hard to imagine that it's been 25 years since the debut of De La Soul's album "3ft High & Rising." To celebrate, the Hip Hop group has made their entire musical catalog available for download. Starting Friday, February 14th at 8:00am PST, for 25 hours, De La Soul's entire collection will be available online, absolutely free.
The impact of De La Soul's music can be heard in today's music like Common, The Roots and The Black Eyed Peas. Their unique sound entangles intellectual lyrics with familiar and boundless samples that lay on top of head nodding beats. Their monumental influence on the international DJ scene has placed them high on top a pedestal.
International DJ and Bay Area resident, "DJ Shortkut," has performed with the band said this about the group "Its dope on De La Soul's part to make their sh*t available for free. Especially for the younger generation who didn't experience their music growing up." Shortkut goes on to say "Listening to these albums, you'll know why they are the best Hip Hop group ever."
The Hip Hop group's music, though entirely creative, has been difficult to include through online music services. Due to some of their samples "not fully licensed" it has prevented inclusion on most digital platforms. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, De La Soul member, "Posdnous" said "We've been blessed to be in the Library of Congress, but we can't even have our music on iTunes. We've been working hard to get that resolved."
De La Soul's catalog includes their first album "3ft High and Rising" along with "De La Soul Is Dead," "Buhloone Mindstate" and "Stakes Is High." Also included are two AOL Session albums and a remix album. De La soul's hit songs include "Say No Go," "Buddy" and "Me Myself & I." All available digitally via their website, wearedelasoul.com, through Saturday, February 15.
