Highway 280 Labor Day Weekend Shutdown Starts Thursday Afternoon

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Commuters should brace for another closure of a portion of Interstate 280 in San Francisco this Labor Day Weekend.

The highway closure between the U.S. Highway 101/Highway 280 interchange and downtown San Francisco will begin Thursday, August 28 at 2 p.m. and is scheduled to last until Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 5 a.m., according to Caltrans officials.

Highway 280 Labor Day Weekend Shutdown Starts Thursday Afternoon

This is the third and final in a series of closures planned during holiday weekends this year, as Caltrans works to replace broken hinges along the viaduct between Cesar Chavez and 24th streets.

Caltrans engineer and project manager Joon Kang said the broken hinges were discovered during a biannual inspection.

"There are many hinges throughout the entire structure, but only four of them were damaged," he said.

Kang said the hinges, which allow for expansion, contraction and movement during an earthquake, likely took on more stress than those in other areas.

Caltrans expects that there will be significant travel delay during this northbound closure and advisers travelers to take alternate routes and public transportation when possible.

The on-ramps affected by the closure include Alemany Boulevard, the Highway 101 connector to northbound Interstate 280, 18th Street and Indiana Street.

Northbound on-ramp closures include:

  • Alemany Boulevard on-ramp
  • U.S. 101 connector to northbound Interstate 280
  • Indiana Street/25th Street on-ramp
  • 18th Street on-ramp

Southbound I-280 will remain open during this closure.
