Highway 1 South Of Big Sur Remains Closed Due To Rockslide
BIG SUR, Monterey County (CBS/ AP) -- California highway officials are trying to determine the best way to clean up a rockslide that has shut down Highway 1 south of Big Sur.
The highway remained closed on Tuesday, two days after heavy rains brought the rocks down. California Department of Transportation spokesman Jim Shivers said there was no estimate on when it would reopen.
Businesses in Big Sur and along the coast remained open although motorists had to rely on detours to reach them.
The rocks came down a steep cliff near Limekiln Creek and went underneath mesh safety netting. The area is prone to rock slides.
