Higher Bay Area Public Transit Fares, Tolls Enacted
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Public transit became a little less attractive for Bay Area commuters Friday as a number of fare hikes were enacted July 1st.
Among the changes, Caltrain raised its base fare by 25 cents. According to the Peninsula rail service's website, this is the sixth time since 2005 that it has increased its fares.
KCBS' Tim Ryan Reports:
Despite an averted strike for Golden Gate Ferry service, a five percent fare increase goes into effect on the same day. The increase along with jobs cuts are designed to offset a budget shortfall.
San Francisco Muni riders will now pay $2 more for an adult fast pass; while youth and senior passes, as well as passes for the disabled and low-income riders, will see a $1 increase.
Meanwhile, truckers will be paying a considerable amount more to ride across state-owned bridges.
John Goodwin with the Bay Area Toll Authority said a three-axle vehicle will pay $10.50, $14 for four axles, and $18 for five axles.
