High Speed Chase Leads to Standoff
PITTSBURG, Calif. (KCBS)_ A Wednesday afternoon high-speed chase in Contra Costa County, turned into a stand-off between police and a man holding gun to his own head is over. Police are now saying the man is a possible murder suspect and a homicide investigation is underway.
According to police, the suspect has been identified as a 30-year-old Baypoint resident Prudencio Rubio.
Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesman Jimmie Lee told KCBS his department was looking for the man earlier after they received a tip that there was a dead body in a house on the 1900 block of Calaveras Drive in West Pittsburg.
Upon arrival deputies did confirm that there in fact was a dead male inside one of the bedrooms.
Rubio fled onto Highway 4 in his yellow SUV when police arrived.
For 45 minutes the man led a couple dozen CHP units on a chase up and down Highway 4 between Concord and Pittsburg.
He left the freeway for the last time on Bailey Road in West Pittsburg and his parked SUV was then surrounded by officers on Calveras Drive.
The hostage negotiation team had cell-phone communication with the suspect as they pleaded with him to give himself up. Rubio held a gun up to his head several times at this point.
At around 5:45 p.m. the suspect gave himself up and was taken into custody with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his leg.
The homicide investigation is underway as police do not know the connection between Rubio and the dead body.
Rubio was taken to an area hospital.
