Hercules Man Killed In Home Invasion Gone Wrong
HERCULES (CBS SF) -- A Hercules man's fight to defend his property and his girlfriend during a home invasion robbery cost him his life Wednesday.
Police say it was a random, brazen home invasion that played out in broad daylight right in front of a neighbor across the street.
The neighbor called 911 to report a fight between his neighbor and a stranger.
The homeowner fought the robber next to a truck in the driveway, but was ultimately killed in the attack.
Police say after the robber killed the victim, he dragged the body into the garage and attacked the homeowner's girlfriend.
Hercules police found her unconscious inside the house. She was listed in critical condition Thursday.
Hercules Police Detective Connie Van Putten said initial reports of a shooting were incorrect. A BB gun believed belonging to the suspect was found in front of the victim's house and the suspect was located two blocks away with blood all over his hands and clothes.
The man was arrested. His identity has not yet been released.
Van Putten said the victim suffered head trauma, but the woman's did not have visible injuries but was unconscious when police arrived.
Police believe the suspect had been casing the neighborhood on a bicycle before the attack. "He had been seen in the neighborhood for at least an hour is my understanding," Van Putten told KPIX 5.
Neighbors were stunned by the attack. "I have kids and family here next door. Shocking, and I'm very sad, a little bit scared too you know because it could be me next time," neighbor Tarsem Singh said.
