Man Fatally Shot By Hayward Police Officer

HAYWARD (BCN) -- A man was fatally shot by a police officer responding to a disturbance in Hayward Thursday morning, a police lieutenant said.

Officers were responding to an 8:50 a.m. report of some sort of dispute between a landlord and tenant at a home in the 2600 block of Depot Road, Hayward police Lt. Roger Keener said.

The first officer to arrive at the scene encountered the suspect, who was allegedly brandishing a weapon, police said.

Fearing for his safety, the officer opened fire on the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Keener.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting. Keener said that since the officer has not yet been interviewed, he does not yet know what exactly transpired prior to the shooting.

A large hunting-style knife was found on the ground next to the man, he said.

The man's name will not be released by the Alameda County coroner's bureau until his family has been notified of the death, and police had not yet released the name of the officer involved in the shooting as of Thursday afternoon.
