Hayward Teenager Dies After Suffering Seizure At School
HAYWARD (CBS SF) - A 14-year-old boy died at a hospital after suffering a seizure at Cesar Chavez Middle School in Hayward Tuesday morning.
The fire department was called to the school, located at 27845 Whitman St., at 9:10 a.m., Hayward fire Capt. Thor Poulsen said.
When paramedics arrived, the boy was unresponsive, Poulsen said. They tried unsuccessfully to revive him at the scene, then transported him to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, Poulsen said.
"We did everything we could for this young man," he said.
He said he did not have more details on the incident.
Donna Becnel, assistant superintendent at the Hayward Unified School District, said the student, an eighth-grader, was playing basketball outdoors and fell.
She said counselors have been brought to the school to provide support for grieving students and staff.
"Our condolences go out to the family, it's a tragic loss," Becnel said.
