Hayward Passes Ban On Polystyrene Foam
HAYWARD (AP) -- Hayward is joining a list of Alameda County cities taking steps to improve the environment by restricting the use of polystyrene foam.
In an unanimous decision Tuesday, city officials voted to ban the use of the foam, commonly called Styrofoam, at restaurants in the city.
The Oakland Tribune reports that local environmental groups pushed for the ban, while the California Restaurant Association opposed it.
The newspaper said the ban in Hayward comes after Oakland, Fremont, Alameda, Albany and Emeryville recently passed ordinances restricting the use of polystyrene.
Berkeley passed a ban on polystyrene foam 20 years ago.
Restaurants in Hayward will have until July to conform to the new restrictions.
