Hayward Man Arrested After Standoff With Police

HAYWARD (BCN) -- A 35-year-old man was arrested after a standoff with police that lasted more than an hour in Hayward Friday afternoon, a police sergeant said.

The standoff began after the man, whose name is not yet being released, was stopped at 2:36 p.m. as he walked near the intersection of Elmwood Lane and Amador Street, Hayward police Sgt. Steve Brown said.

The female officer stopped the man, who was acting suspiciously, and asked for his identification, Brown said.

After handing the officer his wallet, the man suddenly fled, according to Brown.

He appeared to have something in his hand, possibly a knife or gun, as he fled on foot toward a home Redbud Lane where his identification card said he lived, Brown said.

With a California Highway Patrol helicopter flying overhead, Officers surrounded the home and eventually entered the residence.

After initially not seeing anyone inside, officers detected movement in the home's attic, where they found the suspect and arrested him without incident around 4:15 p.m., Brown said.

Investigators were searching the attic and the rest of the home late Friday afternoon to see if the man may have discarded any evidence relevant to the case, Brown said.
