Hayward Father Shot In Head; Teenage Son Arrested
HAYWARD (BCN) - Police arrested a 15-year-old boy suspected of shooting his father in the head at a home in Hayward on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 27000 block of Gading Road at about 4 p.m. and found a 36-year-old man who had been shot once in the head, police said.
The teen fled the home after the shooting, but police found him a short time later in Eldridge Park, about two blocks away, police Lt. Roger Keener said.
"He appeared to be hiding in some bushes," Keener said.
The boy was taken into custody without incident and booked into Juvenile Hall. The weapon, a handgun, was found in the park.
The father was taken to a hospital and remained in the intensive care unit Thursday, Keener said.
"Last night it was deemed a pretty significant injury, although that has stabilized today," he said.
The circumstances of the shooting are not yet clear, Keener said.
He said there were four other people at the home at the time - two women and the teen's grandfather and 12-year-old sister.
One of those people called police after the shooting, he said.
Keener said he could not confirm reports that an argument had preceded the shooting, saying police are still considering all possible scenarios including that the shooting was an accident or self-defense.
