Cyclist Killed In Hayward Hit-And-Run Identified
HAYWARD (CBS SF) – A bicyclist who was killed by a hit-and-run driver near an Interstate 880 on-ramp in Hayward earlier this week has been identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as 26-year-old Jose Enciso Hernandez of Hayward.
Hernandez was found lying near his bicycle on the right side of the on-ramp to Interstate Highway 880 from Tennyson Road at about 7 a.m. on Wednesday and was pronounced dead at the scene.
California Highway Patrol Officer Joseph Fowler said investigators aren't sure if Hernandez was struck late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
He said officers will be talking to Hernandez's family to try to find out where he had been and what he had been doing before the collision.
Fowler said one reason Hernandez wasn't spotted earlier is that he was wearing dark clothes, his bicycle was black and he was in the weeds.
He said it appears that Hernandez was crossing the road in a nearby crosswalk when a vehicle struck him but the vehicle that hit him didn't stop.
Fowler said investigators are looking into the possibility that Hernandez was hit by a maroon vehicle because maroon-colored debris was found at the scene, although it's not yet known if that debris is connected to the fatal collision.
Fowler said anyone with information about the crash should call the CHP's Hayward office at (510) 489-1500.
