Hayward Carjacking Suspect Arrested After Motel Standoff
HAYWARD (CBS SF) - A man suspected in an armed carjacking in Oakland last month was arrested Monday morning by Alameda County sheriff's deputies after a standoff at a Budget Inn in Hayward.
A deputy on patrol in unincorporated Hayward at about 5 a.m. spotted a silver Mercedes SUV that had been stolen in a carjacking in Oakland in which a shotgun was used, sheriff's Lt. Tom Madigan said.
The deputy tried to pull over the SUV, but the driver refused to yield, leading the deputy on a brief chase that ended when the driver pulled into the parking lot of a Budget Inn at 21598 Foothill Blvd., exited the car and ran into a motel room.
"Rather than chase him into the hotel room, we surrounded the hotel," Madigan said.
Negotiators were called in, and about 30 guests were evacuated, he said.
The negotiators were able to speak with the man by phone and he told them he wanted to talk to his mother before surrendering, Madigan said.
"I believe he did call his mom, and he came out," Madigan said.
The man, identified as 30-year-old parolee Sylvester Williams, was then taken into custody, he said.
Madigan said it appears Williams was staying at the motel with a female acquaintance, but she was not there when the standoff happened.
Hayward police and the California Highway Patrol assisted in the incident.
