Hayward Boy Found Walking Around School Armed With Knife
HAYWARD (CBS SF) -- School district officials and elementary school are reassuring parents that students were safe after a 10-year-old boy armed himself with a knife Monday morning in Hayward, a police spokesman said.
Police were called to Hillview Crest Elementary School at 31410 Wheelon Ave. around 8:05 a.m., Sgt. Ken Forkus said.
The fifth-grade student grabbed an 8-inch knife from a faculty lounge area and walked down a hallway, where a parent was able to take the knife away, he said.
The boy, who did not threaten anyone while holding the knife, was taken to the principal's office, Forkus said.
A small laceration was found on the parent's hand but medical attention was not needed, he said.
No other injuries were reported, and the school was not placed on lockdown, Forkus said.
The boy was placed on a psychiatric hold, which can last up to 72 hours, the sergeant said.
The student was also placed on a psychiatric hold by police a year ago but Forkus said he did not know the circumstances of that incident.
"The safety of all students, staff, and parents is the number one priority in the New Haven Unified School District," district Co-Superintendent Arlando Smith said in a statement.
"At Hillview Crest today, staff and parents worked together to address a situation, ensuring the safety of all involved," Smith said.
Parents and school staff also kept nearby children safe as the student was disarmed, according to a district statement.
According to the district's student handbook a student who is in possession of a sharp object such as a knife may be eligible for suspension and/or recommended for expulsion.
District officials and staff from Hillview Crest Elementary planned to hold a Monday evening meeting for parents at the school campus to answer any questions regarding the incident.
