Hayward Apartment Fire Leaves Teen Girl In Critical Condition
HAYWARD (KCBS) _ A teenage girl is in critical condition after a fire tore through a Hayward apartment early Sunday morning.
Hayward Fire Battalion Chief Garrett Contreras said there were early concerns about the fire's possible spread.
"At about 1:30 this morning, we were dispatched to a report of an apartment fire with multiple victims trapped," Contreras said. "On arrival, we were met with heavy fire conditions on the second floor of a two-story apartment complex."
KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:
Fire officials said the one-alarm blaze at the apartment on Del Mar Avenue appears to have started in the front room of the upstairs unit.
The apartment was the home of a man and his two daughters.
The elder daughter, a 16-year-old was taken to Eden Hospital and has been listed in critical condition. Fire officials said the father and his 8-year-old daughter were also taken to a local hospital, but both have been listed in stable condition.
Fire investigators have not yet determined what sparked the blaze.
About 15 people were evacuated from the apartment complex, although Contreras said none of the other residences were damaged.
The burned unit is not salvageable and damage is estimated at several hundred thousand dollars.
