Erratic Storm Cells Create Tornado Risk In Bay Area
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Unstable weather Tuesday created the possibility of a rare Tornado touching down in the Bay Area.
"This is going to be one of the most wild weather days in years," said KPIX 5 Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales, who was tracking lightning strikes and even hail flurries around the Bay Area.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration risk map indicated a two percent chance of a twister in the region Tuesday.
According to the Tornado History Project, 42 twisters hit the Bay Area between 1951 and 2012, resulting in three injuries but no deaths.
The most tornado sighting was a 2012 touchdown in the coast off near Sunset Beach State park off the coast of Watsonville.
San Francisco has not recorded a tornado during that time, but every other Bay Area county has seen at least one, according to the Tornado History Project's maps.
