Post-Holiday Shopping Discounts Hard To Find
SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- If you're looking for shopping discounts on the stuff you didn't get for Christmas this year, good luck.
Many stores are not offering as many post-holiday specials this year.
Jim Gleaton walked out of a Target store in San Jose on Monday completely empty handed.
But he didn't find the discounts he was looking for. There seems to be a trend of stores not slashing prices after Christmas as they had in year's past.
Another South Bay shopper named Carol noticed the sales prices were at 50 percent off as opposed to the typical 75 percent off during the post-Christmas shopping season.
Marshall Cohen, the chief retail analyst at NPD Group, said retailers are weaning consumers off those deep discounts they've come to know and expect after the holiday season.
"What's happening this year is what I call discount detox. The retailers have managed their inventory throughout the year in a much better way," said Cohen.
Cohen added that better than expected holiday sales is another factor as to why retailers are in the driver's seat which isn't exactly good news for shoppers.
However, on the bright side it does show signs of an improved economy and Cohen said we've moved out of "frugal fatigue".
