A Half Moon Bay man suspected of elder abuse was arrested Saturday after an hours-long standoff, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said.

Around 6 p.m. Friday, a 67-year-old woman walked into a Half Moon Bay substation and told officers that her 37-year-old son strangled her while they were at home, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office said she had visible injuries and was given medical care.

Deputies were sent to the scene and learned the suspect was experiencing a possible mental health crisis and had barricaded himself inside the home. The Sheriff's Office identified him as 37-year-old Robert A. Kimuracuellar and said he was also suspected of being under the influence of drugs.

The Sheriff's Office said they spent hours on negotiations and other de-escalation tactics, but the suspect refused to leave the home.

According to the Sheriff's Office, a SWAT team was eventually called, and Kimuracuellar left the home. However, the Sheriff's Office said there was no use of force.

Kimuracuellar was taken to a hospital to be evaluated, and he was then taken to the Maguire Correctional Facility and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse causing injury.

A search warrant was executed at the home after the standoff, and deputies are continuing to investigate.
