Half A Million Dollars Worth Of Valuables Stolen From A-Rod's Car In San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- $500,000 worth of valuables were reportedly stolen from baseball legend Alex Rodriguez's rental car in San Francisco Sunday night.
The break-in happened on the 400 block of Brannan Street between 9 p.m. and 11:10 p.m Sunday evening, according to police.
A-Rod was in town broadcasting the Giants and Phillies game for ESPN at Oracle Park.
San Francisco police confirmed to KPIX 5 that among the items stolen were bags, a camera, camera equipment, a laptop computer, jewelry and miscellaneous electrical equipment.
Zara Aurelio, the general manager of the restaurant Marlowe, confirmed that Rodriguez and some other ESPN employees ate at the restaurant Sunday night. Marlowe is located at 500 Brannan Street, just a few blocks from Oracle Park.
At around 10:45 p.m., Aurelio said the group finished eating and went outside.
"That's when they discovered their car got broken into," Aurelio said. "We ushered them back in and waited until police arrived."
"What we really want to ask people is if you're visiting the city like Mr. Rodriguez--and we're sorry, we're sorry this happened to you--or anybody else…don't leave expensive stuff in your car because it makes these crimes more likely to happen again and again," said San Francisco supervisor Matt Haney.
Haney represents the South of Market (SoMa) district. With more than 11,000 break-ins city-wide so far this year--62 a day--Haney says everybody needs to do more to prevent these crimes.
"Most of the time when they break in, they don't break into a superstar's car, they break into a regular person in San Francisco who now has to spend 500 bucks to replace their window. It's a huge hassle, it's expensive, it's a tax on people who live here and it's something we need to change."
The SFPD Burglary Unit is handling the investigation.
