Gunman Arrested After Oakland Elementary School Evacuation
OAKLAND (KCBS) – Oakland police took an armed suspect into custody after a brief search that forced the evacuation of an elementary school in East Oakland's Maxwell Park neighborhood Wednesday morning.
The suspect was arrested near the 2800 block of Monticello Avenue.
Police had been searching the surrounding neighborhood for an armed man since about 11 a.m., police said. Police confirmed that the man had a firearm, but did not specify the type of gun.
By 11:15 a.m., police ordered the evacuation of nearby Maxwell Park International Academy at 4730 Fleming Ave. as a precaution, Oakland schools spokesman Troy Flint said.
The suspect was taken into custody by 11:30 a.m., and the students began returning to class shortly after.
KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:
District officials said that they hoped children would finish out the day, but concerned parents were being allowed to remove their children from class.
