Guilty Verdict In Antioch Mother's Murder
MARTINEZ (AP) - A Contra Costa County jury has convicted a 30-year-old man of first-degree murder for the shooting death of a young mother who confronted a pair of burglars leaving her Antioch apartment.
Alfred Lawrence Jones, of Antioch, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole after being found guilty Monday of the March 2004 killing of 22-year-old Cheryl Ann Macey.
Trial testimony indicated a neighbor called Macey at work to tell her someone was breaking into the apartment she shared with her boyfriend and 3-year-old son.
She went there, saw two men carrying items out and was shot while reaching for her cell phone.
Her foster mother told the Contra Costa Times she could not fathom how Macey was killed "over a Timex watch and PlayStation."
