Conducted each year only between Thanksgiving and Christmas, this brief holiday promotion is an important training school in the basics of sales, particularly for new residents going through Delancey's recovery programs. Holiday buyers can also find at our tree lots mistletoe, indoor tree lights, decorated wreaths, living potted pines, tree removal bags and water bowls for trees. Flame retardant is also available. Locations also in Oakland, Berkeley and El Cerrito.

Don't miss the Guardsmen's Annual Christmas Tree Lot, a hallmark of San Francisco's holiday season for more than 60 years. The Festival Pavilion at Fort Mason Center is transformed into a winter wonderland with trees (as tall as 15 feet), ornaments, wreaths, and jumpies for the children. One of several farms on the winding mountain roads west of Los Gatos, this cut-your-own operations offers spectacular views on a clear day. The drive is not ideal for those prone to car sickness, but families hunting a huge tree will find plenty to pick from. Any tree, no matter how tall, is $50. Open weekends 8:30-4:30 and weekdays 11 am to 4pm, Thanksgiving till Christmas. Cash or check only.

This family-run farm is a popular holiday spot for North Bay families. Larsen's is relatively close to downtown Petaluma, where you can chop your own Monterey pines, redwoods, cypress, and Douglas firs to cut down, along with pre-cut Noble and Douglas firs. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 9am-5pm, Nov. 23rd -Dec. 16. (depending on inventory.) Coffee, hot cider, and baked goods for sale. (Your author is partial to Larsen's. It's where we got trees when I was a kid, a million years ago.)

Now in its seventh season, visitors to Pochini Family Christmas Tree Farm choose their own tree to cut from Douglas, white and grand fir, as well as cypress, cedar and redwood. They also have fun with wreath decorating, taking tractor rides and sampling complimentary hot spiced cider, coffee and candy canes.
