Crews Fight 2-Alarm Grass Fire In Near Hwy. 13 In Oakland
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Firefighters were working Saturday afternoon to extinguish a two-alarm grass fire in Oakland, firefighters said.
As of 3:40 p.m. the fire was burning at Park Boulevard and northbound Highway 13.
The fire forced the closure of a stretch of the highway.
Northbound traffic on Highway 13 is being diverted to Redwood Toad because of the smoke.
Firefighters said it was only about one-and-a-half acres, but they are putting a lot of resources on it to ensure it doesn't spread.
The Oakland firestorm of 1991 was sparked when a small grass fire was incompletely extinguished and then re-ignited the next day. That fire destroyed more than 1500 acres and destroyed more than 2,800 homes in the Oakland and Berkeley hills.
