Crews Gain Upper Hand On Grass Fire Near Bay Point Near Chemical Plant
BAY POINT (CBS SF) - A three-alarm brush fire in Bay Point grew to about 120 acres but was 90 percent contained Thursday evening, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District officials said.
The fire was reported around 1 p.m. at the former Concord Naval Weapons Station in Bay Point near the General Chemical Corp. plant in the area of Nichols Road and Port Chicago Highway, fire Capt. Robert Marshall said.
The fire captain said the federal chemical plant was not threatened by the fire, although employees there were briefly ordered to shelter in place.
As of 5 p.m., the blaze had burned roughly 120 acres just east of the federal weapons station along Port Chicago Highway but was 90 percent contained, fire spokesman Steve Aubert said.
Part of Port Chicago Highway was shut down as crews battled the fire.
No evacuations were ordered and no structures were threatened.
