San Jose Grass Fire Gets Close To Homes, Mall
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Firefighters controlled a large brush fire in a field near the Eastridge Shopping Center in San Jose Friday evening, a fire captain said.
The fire was reported at 5:44 p.m. near Quimby Road and the East Capitol Expressway, Capt. Cleo Doss said.
Fire crews arrived and found the fire comprising about 30 acres, sending black smoke billowing into the air.
About 60 San Jose firefighters responded along with personnel from Cal Fire, which also provided a helicopter to assist.
The fire had started near Quimby and spread south away from the shopping center. Doss said that the fire threatened neither the shopping center nor surrounding housing developments and there were no evacuations.
The fire was contained at 7:39 p.m.
Two civilians were treated for smoke inhalation and released at the scene. Fire crews will remain there overnight checking for hot spots and making sure the fire is completely out.
