Gov. Brown Not Interested In Prop. 13 Reforms
FRESNO (CBS /AP) -- Gov. Jerry Brown said he is not planning to reform Proposition 13 as a way to stabilize California's finances, as Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa proposed a day earlier.
Brown responded to the mayor's comments Wednesday, after a luncheon address to the Maddy Institute in Fresno. Villaraigosa challenged Brown and state lawmakers to think big in solving California's ongoing fiscal problems, suggesting that the property tax cap be lifted for businesses but left in place for homeowners.
Brown said he would focus his attention elsewhere to ensure the state's financial stability. He did not offer specifics beyond saying he plans to support a ballot initiative next year for new revenue.
Brown spent the day meeting with Fresno's elected officials, law enforcement and other local leaders.
