Google CEO's Alleged Secret 'Flying Car' Spotted At Hollister Airport
HOLLISTER (KPIX 5) -- The car of the future may not be on the road. It will be in the sky.
Far away from Silicon Valley at the Hollister Airport, flying cars of the future may already be a reality.
A witness who works next to the tarmac caught one on camera. It looks a lot like a very small single-engine plane, but locals have spotted the aircraft hovering at low distances before landing vertically.
"On the one hand it seems fantastical, on the other hand, it would be perfect - we need this," says Russell Hancock, President and CEO of Joint Venture Silicon Valley.
"We need this in Silicon Valley of all places. Silicon Valley should be applying its innovative acumen to the problem of mobility."
Hancock believes this is a project that requires privacy and space.
Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Google co-founder Larry Page personally invested a $100 million in Zee.Aero, a startup whose website says it's working on a revolutionary new form of transportation.
Zee.Aero is based in Mountain View but it appears to have expanded its operation to a hangar at Hollister airport. KPIX 5 contacted the startup, but they had no comment.
A Zee.Aero patent filed in 2013 shows drawings of an aircraft about the size of a car that can hover.
"This is a very risky venture and they have a thicket of regulatory issues that they're going to have to penetrate and you know, it's a little crazy," says Hancock. "That might not be the right fit for Google, or its parent company Alphabet. As a private venture on the other hand - it makes all kinds of sense."
