Good Question: What Are My Rights If I Set Off A Store Security Alarm?

(CBS 5) – Most of us have walked out of a store, with the security tag still attached to the item purchased. In this Good Question: What are your rights if you set off a store security alarm?

ANSWER: According to Captain Richard Corriea of the San Francisco Police Department, it's always better to simply go back into the store and find out what's causing the beeping alarm to go off.

He also suggested that the shopper cooperate with store security or personnel and tell the truth. Corriea said most of the time it's simply a malfunction of the alarm or a sensor that may have been left on the item. He said whatever you do, don't run away.
