Golden State Warriors Advance; Win Game 5 Against Spurs
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- The Golden State Warriors won Game 5 against the Antonio Spurs Tuesday night.
The team's failure to sweep the series has paid off in ticket sales and more.
The Warriors defeated the Spurs 99-91 in Game 5.
Warriors ownership pockets about $11 million per playoff game. In addition to ticket sales, the Warriors also made that money from parking, food and retail sales.
Fans had hoped for a sweep, but they say there's a silver lining to losing.
Warriors fan K. Abdul said, "Game 5 at home is always a better economic situation for the Warriors."
It's true, losing Game 4 meant cashing in big for Game 5.
KPIX-5 Sports Director Dennis O'Donnell said, "By it going one extra game, the estimates are in the neighborhood of $11 million."
That's $11 million per game pocketed by Warriors ownership from merchandise to parking to food to ticket sales.
Especially tickets, about 20,000 of them, were they going for an average of $200 a piece. That alone would rake in $4 million. But KPIX 5 found some third party VIP tickets were in the $4,000 range.
"That's a lot of money to lose if a series is a four-game series sweep, so Game 5 is not such a bad thing," O'Donnell said.
It's not such a bad thing for ticket marketplaces like Gametime either. They root for longer series and told us they expect their ticket sales to spike by 50 percent.
Fans say there's another reason to cheer a five game series: Steph Curry will get more time to rest his injured knee.
