Warriors Owners May Push To Buy A's, Build Oakland Waterfront Stadium
OAKLAND (KCBS) - The owners of the Golden State Warriors have reportedly been approached about buying the A's as part of a plan that would keep the team in Oakland at a waterfront stadium near Jack London Square.
The investors that have proposed building a 39,000-seat baseball stadium at Howard Terminal have shopped that plan to Warriors owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, as well as several other investment groups, according to the East Bay Express.
Lacob and Guber tried unsuccessfully to buy the A's in 2002.
Lew Wolff swiftly rejected the idea of building a $500 million ballpark at a recently vacated site along the Oakland Estuary that is being sought by the CEO of Clorox and the former head of Dreyer's Ice Cream to prevent the A's from moving to San Jose.
The last leaseholder for Howard Terminal, SSA Marine was allowed to leave the site to settle a lawsuit against the Port of Oakland. State law generally favors maritime uses for waterfront parcels, but Port officials say it's unclear if the site can be still be used for maritime purposes.
Oakland Mayor Jean Quan says she backs the idea of bringing baseball to the waterfront, something Wolff described "as close to impossible as anything."
