Golden Gate Transit Ferries May Be Equipped With Wi-Fi By Summer
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)—Golden Gate Transit may offer Wi-Fi service on ferries by this summer if the agency's board of directors approves a plan later this week.
BART, Capitol Corridor, AC Transit, and Valley Transit already have various levels of wireless service. Surveys show it is an amenity that commuters want.
Mary Currie from the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District said a Wi-Fi system is already in the installation phase on their bus system and expects the board to approve the ferry plan on Friday.
KCBS' Bob Butler Reports:
Currie said Wi-Fi on the ferries would cost $260,000 and the "initially free" service would be financed by bridge tolls, adding it would satisfy a major demand from commuters.
"A lot of people are working into and home from work," Currie noted, saying Wi-Fi service may modify commute patterns for her customers.
