Golden Gate Transit Commuters Could Soon Pay More
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The Golden Gate Bridge District Board is scheduled to vote later this month on a proposal to raise fares for its bus and ferry riders.
The district projects an $89 million budget shortfall over the next five years.
KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:
"We're looking at increasing the bus fares by five percent per year for the next five years," said District Spokeswoman Mary Currie. "On the ferry system we're looking at increasing the cash fare on the Sausalito line by a $1.50 at Larkspur."
Currie said that the district has received 19 comments from the public on the proposal, which is far less than in the past. At a Thursday morning public hearing, only one person addressed the board.
"You would have essentially two different systems for service within Marin if you said that people have to pay $2.25 for a regional route, but $2.00 for a local route," said Amy VanDorn, the director of operations for Marin Transit, which contracts with Golden Gate Transit for bus service.
VanDorn asked the board not to change what it charges for travel within Marin County.
The proposal goes to the full board on April 22nd for a vote. The new fares would start July 1st.
