Golden Gate Paint Job Having Big Impact On Walkers And Bikers
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The two main cables that hold up the Golden Gate Bridge are getting completely repainted for the first time since the iconic span opened in 1937.
The four-year paint job is having a big impact on walkers and bikers who cross the bridge.
The west sidewalk is set to reopen to cyclists on Saturday after being closed for several months.
But starting next week people will not be able to walk all the way from San Francisco to Marin County. Instead they will have to turn around at the north tower.
Summer fog has hampered the work because paint doesn't stick when the cables are wet. At one point painters couldn't work for more than two weeks because of the fog.
