Golden Gate Bridge's Moveable Barrier To Be Installed Next January
SAN FRANCISO (KCBS)— The opening of a new Golden Gate Bridge moveable barrier will be in early January 2015, according to transit officials. The installation will require the bridge to be shutdown for two-days while the work is completed.
Originally the bridge work was slated to be done by this October, but was pushed back to January 12, at 4 a.m., meaning work will have to get underway by the 10th.
Marin Independent Journal reports San Rafael-based Ghilotti Bros. Inc. has won the $5.6 million contract for work on the traffic separator. The barrier project's total cost is estimated at $30.3 million, mostly paid in federal grants.
Golden Gate Bridge officials said that the weekend of the shutdown has historically had less traffic, so there would be minimal impact. Engineers said they are prepared to work in any weather conditions.
Pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge's sidewalks and Golden Gate Transit buses will continue to operate on the roadway, but no one else.
During the installation the toll plaza will be redesigned, which has upset several Golden Gate Transportation District board members who said the plaza is a historic structure.
