Golden Gate Bridge Moveable Concrete Barrier Likely 2 Years Away
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)—A long-awaited plan to install a moveable concrete barrier on the Golden Gate Bridge is inching closer to reality, but government bureaucracy could delay the project until 2014.
While bridge officials have said they're ready, they now have to wait for approval from the state.
The bridge is currently divided by a median of plastic tubes in both the northbound and southbound lanes.
Bridge Spokeswoman Mary Currie said they've been looking into adding a moveable median barrier since at least the 1980s.
KCBS' Bob Butler Reports:
"The bridge has completed most of its steps, but it's not working with the state," Curry explained. "We will be using some right of way at the north end of the bridge which is owned by Caltrans."
The bridge will go through additional reviews, safety studies and traffic studies to be in accordance with the plan to have a design by next year and the barrier in place by 2014.
