Golden Gate Bridge Could Eliminate Toll Takers
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) --- Within the next two years, the Golden Gate Bridge District hopes to collect all its tolls electronically.
The bridge board's finance committee will look at the proposal on Thursday. It calls for phasing out collecting cash tolls by the end of 2012 for those who don't have the FasTrak electronic toll system.
Officials said license plates would be used to bill car owners, and rental car companies would be billed.

Bridge manager Kary Witt said more than 30 toll takers will lose their jobs.
"We have about 825 employees in the district, 30 some percent of whom are at or near retirement," he said.
The plan must be approved by the bridge board. Officials say the district would save more than $16 million over 10 years in salaries and benefits.
