Glide Church Feeding Thousands For Christmas In San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Hundreds of volunteers are busy Christmas morning preparing meals for thousands of homeless and hungry guests at Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco.
More than 500 volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to prepare and serve Christmas breakfast, lunch and dinner to more than 5,000 expected guests at the Tenderloin church, Glide director Jean Cooper said Wednesday morning.
Breakfast wrapped up around 8:30 a.m. at the church located at 330 Ellis St. and volunteers were starting to carve hams and turkeys that will be served for dinner starting at 11:30 a.m.
Also on the Christmas dinner menu is salad, yams, stuffing, vegetables and carrot cake for dessert, Cooper said.
Cooper said many volunteers return each year to help Glide feed the hungry as part of a Christmas tradition, while other volunteers are giving a hand for the first time Wednesday.
After the holidays end, Cooper said there is a continued need for volunteers and donations at Glide.
She encouraged those interested in helping the organization with its services get information online at www.glide.org.
