Girl Struck, Killed By Car While Crossing Street In Pittsburg
PITTSBURG (CBS SF) -- A 13-year-old girl was struck and killed by a vehicle as she was crossing a street in Pittsburg on Sunday evening, according to police.
The girl was identified today by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as Jordyn Molton of Pittsburg.
Molton was struck shortly before 6 p.m. as she was crossing School Street at the corner of Harbor Street with a group of friends, Pittsburg police Capt. Ron Raman said.
She was heading west and was in the crosswalk when she was hit, but it appears that the driver had a green light, Raman said.
She was taken to a hospital, where she died. None of the other children were hurt.
"It's obviously a very tragic incident for the friends and parents, the Pittsburg school district and the whole Pittsburg community, as well as for the first responders," Raman said.
The girl was a student at Pittsburg's Martin Luther King Jr. Junior High School.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the girl stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, who don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors, Raman said.
