Giants Reportedly Signing Mike Morse To Play Left Field
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Multiple media outlets are reporting that the San Francisco Giants will sign veteran slugger Mike Morse to fill the starting left field vacancy for the 2014 season.
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the one-year deal has a base salary of $5 million, with incentives that will kick in if his numbers rebound after a down 2013 season split between Baltimore and Seattle.
While battling injuries last year, 31-year-old hit a career worst .215 last season with just 13 home runs.
As recently as 2011 he hit .303 for the Washington Nationals, blasting 31 homers and driving in 95.
Morse will likely be a defensive downgrade from Gregor Blanco and Andres Torres, who split much of the time in left field last season. He also has experience playing first base.
The left field spot was considered the Giants' largest remaining need after the team rounded out the rotation by bringing back Tim Lincecum and Ryan Vogelsong while adding veteran Tim Hudson.
