Giants' Johnny Cueto To Start For National League In All-Star Game

SAN DIEGO (CBS SF) -- San Francisco Giants pitcher Johnny Cueto, the National League leader in wins, will start for the NL in the All-Star Game Tuesday in San Diego.

The Chicago White Sox's Chris Sale will start for the American League in the midsummer classic, to be played at Petco Park in San Diego.

Acquired as a free agent by the Giants from the Royals this season, Cueto brings a 13-1 record into the midsummer classic, along with a 2.47 ERA.

Cueto, who will be making his second career All-Star appearance, has matched a career-high four complete games at the halfway point of the season. He is also the first Giants pitcher to begin his a stint with the team by winning at least 13 of his first 14 decisions.

"I was just happy to be participating in the game," Cueto said through a translator. "But I'm very happy."

Cueto impressed New York Mets manager Terry Collins with a two-hitter for Kansas City in Game 2 of last year's World Series, the first complete game by an AL pitcher in the Series since Jack Morris in 1991.

"That was the best outing I've ever seen him have," Collins said.

Cueto becomes the fourth Giant to be named the starting All-Star pitcher since 1989 joining Tim Lincecum in 2009, Jason Schmidt in 2003 and Rick Reuschel in 1989.
