Giants Fan Beating Suspect Investigated In Nevada Shooting
LOS ANGELES (CBS) - Giovanni Ramirez, the man suspected of brutally beating San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow outside Dodger Stadium on March 31, is also being investigated in an attempted murder case in Nevada.
CBS obtained an official document that shows Ramirez is a named suspect in a premeditated shooting that took place in Henderson, Nevada, about 15 miles southeast of Las Vegas, earlier this year. The suspect description in that case - just like in the Stow attack - indicates that the shooter was wearing Los Angeles Dodgers gear.
KCBS Chris Filippi Reports:
Ramirez took a pair of polygraph tests, Tuesday night administered by the defense and Wednesday afternoon by police, over the Dodger Stadium attack incident. He has previously claimed that he was watching his daughter at the time of the crime, and not at the ballpark.
Although Ramirez's attorneys said they couldn't discuss results of the tests, polygraph expert Jack Trimarco, who tested Ramirez for the defense, hinted that the suspect had passed.
Even though results of lie detector tests are seldom admissible in state court, Ramirez's attorneys hoped the move would convince prosecutors not to press charges.
Ramirez's attorneys also said Wednesday that they had handed over several documents, including cell phone records, to detectives. Lawyers said they have 11 alibi witnesses who can prove Ramirez is innocent.
LAPD Detective Jose Carrillo said investigators had also spoken to some of those witnesses and they had given conflicting statements.
"I am not worried about anything," Carrillo said when asked if he was confident the case would proceed.
Stow, a 42-year-old paramedic and father of two from Santa Cruz, has been in a coma for much of the past two months. He was transferred to San Francisco General Hospital last month to continue care closer to his family.
He remains in critical but stable condition under heavy sedation to prevent seizures caused by traumatic brain injury.
Ramirez was arrested May 22 following an intensive investigation into the beating outside Dodger Stadium. Stow, who was wearing Giants gear, was attacked by two men as he left the stadium. Police are still seeking the other man who took part in the assault and a woman who was spotted driving them away afterward.
Ramirez, 31, has not been charged in the Stow case and remains in custody on an alleged violation of his parole terms.
Court records show Ramirez has a violent criminal past that includes the 1999 attempted robbery of an elderly woman. In 2005, he was convicted of possession of a firearm by a felon.
