Giants Clinch Spot In Wild Card Playoff Game After Milwaukee Loss
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The San Francisco Giants have clinched a berth in the Wild Card playoff game as a result of the Milwaukee Brewers loss Thursday against the Cincinnati Reds.
The Giants limp into the postseason, winning only three of their last 10 games and losing two out of three games to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who clinched the National League West title in a 9-1 victory over San Francisco Wednesday.
The Giants will likely face the Pittsburgh Pirates in a one-game playoff to determine which team advances to the National League Division Series. An less likely scenario would have the Pirates overtake the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central standings and the Cardinals going to the Wild Card game against the Giants.
Pittsburgh is ahead of the Giants by one game for the top Wild Card spot with four games remaining and the Pirates holding the tie-breaker due to a better head-to-head record.
The Wild Card playoff will be played Wednesday, October 1 at the home stadium of the team with the better record. Based on head-to-head meetings, Pittsburgh holds the tiebreaker over the Giants while San Francisco holds the tiebreaker over St. Louis.
